"abstract": "Documented counts of men and cannon at the California presidios, drawn from the muster rolls and ordnance inventories in the C-A transcripts. Open any fort for its full dated series with citations. The point the numbers make: in 1813 a single Russian outpost at Ross reported about 13 mounted cannon, while the entire San Francisco defense in 1802 had only ~5 of its ~13 pieces mounted and serviceable. Province-wide in 1830 there were 54 pieces on paper, most unserviceable, on gun platforms too rotten to work. Where two Savage copies of the same report disagree, both figures are shown.",

The series has earlier and later rungs: in 1797 the viceroy shuffled two- and three-pounder cannon from San Miguel and Loreto to fortify the new frontier mission, and a San Diego gunner coaxed a broken 24-pounder back into service; by December 1835 the artillery company itself musters by presidio: Monterey five corporals, a drummer and eleven gunners; San Francisco one and four; Santa Bárbara one and five.",

The floor of the curve is documented twice over: in 1804 the governor, writing from Loreto, reported 'el mal estado de los Presidios y escasez de tropa'; and an 1833 muster analysis found only 35 men present in all California, the company's bulk at Santa Bárbara with Figueroa, and ten men holding the capital. The reinforcements came counted too: the Mazatlán squadron's 1819 detachment for Alta California boarded the Cosak as a full estado de fuerza: a captain, two lieutenants, two alféreces, sergeants, drummers, corporals and men, itemized before they sailed.",

The population is the table's own paper figure, 2–4x any census of the Californias (the catalogue notes it probably counts gentiles — Native people outside the state's control), and the formula holds at one musket per 250 inhabitants.
